School Nursing - "Current Issues in School Health, 2007 and beyond"

School nurses by the very nature of their work environment face a wide variety of issues and situations to deal with everyday. Be it the stream of students presenting to her door with colds and flu-like symptoms, the gushing of blood from the student who had an accident in wood technology. The ever-present threat of sporting injuries that occur at lunchtime or the young student that just needs someone to talk to about her Mum's mental illness.

Campus based school nurses are often lone practitioners dealing with a multitude of situations and crisis so it is no wonder that the school nurse conference held on Saturday August 18th was so well attended by 150 nurses from a wide variety of schools. These schools included Independent, Catholic and State schools. School nurses attend to the needs of students from Kindergarten right through to and sometimes beyond Year 12, so need to be up to date with a wide variety of conditions is essential. Held at the Cripps Centre at Caulfield Grammar, these school nurses were able to hear current information from bone injuries to childhood rashes, anaphylaxis management to immunisation of the Gardasil vaccine.

The ability to be able to network with other school nurses was a vital component of the conference, allowing school nurses to meet other nurses working at similar schools. With several nurses taking the option to attend the post conference dinner.
