Delivery of units leading to a qualification for enrolled nurses to administer intravenous medication


This course is for eligible Enrolled Nurses who registered prior to 2008 and have medication administration qualifications in four routes (oral, enteral, intramuscular and subcutaneous. Successful students will be able to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia to deliver all five routes including intravenous medication. Applications close Friday 20 August 2010.
The following two units form the HLT51607 Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) have been selected and accredited for Enrolled Nurses, who registered prior to 2008, to administer intravenous medication:
  • HLTEN505A Contribute to the Complex Nursing Care of Clients (90hours)
  • HTLEN519A Administer & Monitor Intravenous Medications in the Nursing Environment (100hours)

This short course is 190 hours with 114 hours of theory and 76 hours of clinical experience. Both components must be completed successfully to achieve the qualification. The course will be delivered over 24 days on a two-day per week basis including time allocated for revision, examinations and nursing laboratory practice and assessments. A two-week clinical placement* will take place at the conclusion of the theoretical component.

Entry level criteria

  1. Current registration as an Enrolled Nurse with a qualification in medication administration in four routes (oral, enteral, intramuscular and subcutaneous)
  2. Registration as a Division 2 RN prior to 2008
  3. Provision of successful VETASSESS test results undertaken within the last two years.

This course will start on 8 September 2010 and will be offered over 24 days on the following dates:
September 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30; October 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28; November 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 *Clinical placements need to take place during January/February 2011.
