One of the most underrated and previously unrecognised hazards that nurses are exposed to in their work is stress. The nature of nurses' work is characterised by stress-inducing circumstances which include issues associated with shift work, workload, mastering technology and the need to respond to emergency situations. Workplace stress was identified as a high-risk hazard by more than 60 per cent of nurses, higher than all other hazards, including lifting, needle-stick injuries and violence at work (Occupational Exposures in Australian Nurses. Results of the Project, Australian Safety and Compensation Council, March 2008).
