Federal ANF launches new national nursing and midwifery campaign

21 August 2012, 4:13pm

Federal ANF has launched a new national campaign to raise awareness of the invaluable and skilled work nurses and midwives do 24-hours a day across Australia.

The campaign features cinema, television and radio advertisements showing real nurses and midwives at work at three different hospitals.

ANF spent many months last year speaking with members across Australia, who were nurses, midwives and personal care workers, as well as members of the wider community to find out their feelings about the health system, and how they felt health care should be improved.

In launching the campaign this week Federal ANF Secretary Lee Thomas said: "We want this positive campaign to focus on the significant contribution nurses and midwives make to the health system every day, and the trust the community have in them to deliver safe patient care whilst they are being treated and cared for."

Advertisements during the first phase of the campaign will not air in Victoria, but members are encouraged to share the ads online. View the ads. Share the ads. ANF (Vic Branch) decided to delay investing member's funds on running the advertisements in Victoria pending consideration of our name change. ANF (Victorian) Branch recently formally requested Federal ANF Council consider and support the inclusion of midwifery in the Federation's name. ANF (Vic Branch) cannot made a decision to change its name on its own as it is not a state-registered union and exists as part of the national Australian Nursing Federation federal body.

Resolutions to change the ANF's name to include midwifery have been voted down at the 2006 and 2010 Annual Delegates Conferences. Last month's conference revealed a significant change in views with agreement amongst the vast majority of delegates that it was time to change our name to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Vic Branch). Over the past decade there have been many changes to our professional practice and work environment. In particular, since 2004 a growing number of midwives have been educated through direct-entry midwifery courses resulting in them not having a nursing qualification. Since 2010 midwifery has been on a separate register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and many ANF midwifery members are not on the nursing register. The result of this is that those midwives cannot be called a nurse, cannot be registered as a nurse and do not carry out nursing roles. Read more
